WORK: Advisory visit as a travel designer for the High-Quality Inbound Tourism Services: Regional Content Enhancement Initiative
As a travel designer, I had the opportunity to participate in an advisory capacity for the Japan Tourism Agency’s ‘High-Quality Inbound Tourism Services: Regional Content Enhancement Initiative.’ As part of this project, I visited the picturesque Lake Akan area in Hokkaido, a destination renowned for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.
During my visit, I thoroughly assessed the region’s experiential offerings and accommodation facilities, identifying potential areas for improvement and enhancement to cater to the high-quality inbound market. My evaluation encompassed various aspects of the tourism experience.
I reviewed the range of attractions and activities available in the Lake Akan area, considering their appeal to international visitors and assessing the potential for developing new, unique experiences that showcase the region’s distinctive features. I inspected various lodging options, evaluating their services, amenities, and overall guest experience to ensure they meet the expectations of discerning international travellers.
Accessibility and transportation were also essential factors in my assessment. I examined the region’s transportation infrastructure, considering the ease of access for international visitors and identifying potential improvements to enhance the overall travel experience. Furthermore, I explored the culinary scene in the Lake Akan area, evaluating the variety and quality of dining options available and advising on ways to promote local cuisine as a key attraction for international visitors.
Delving into the region’s rich cultural heritage, I identified opportunities to create immersive and authentic experiences that allow international visitors to engage with local traditions and customs. By doing so, I aimed to ensure the Lake Akan area offers guests a well-rounded, memorable experience.
Based on my assessment, I provided tailored recommendations on enhancing and expanding the region’s tourism offerings to better cater to the high-quality inbound market. My advice focused on developing unique, memorable experiences that showcase the best of Lake Akan while maintaining a strong emphasis on delivering exceptional service and hospitality.
The Eastern Hokkaido region has since been chosen as one of 11 areas to receive special support from the Japan Tourism Agency for developing luxury tourism over the next five years.
